A problem everyone should have

I need to decide what to do this weekend.

The UCI World Championships (bike racing of course) are going on in Salzburg, Austria. That’s a 6 or 7 hour drive for me (or 7-8 hours by train). Salzburg is supposed to be nice, I’ve read that the course should be good this year, and it’s very cool to see one of the biggest pro races of the year.

Then there is Oktoberfest in Munich. The real Oktoberfest. This is about a 5 hour drive or 6 hour train ride. I’ve never been there, and I’m sure it would be crazy. (though finding a hotel is a bit questionable at this point).

Bike racers who don’t enjoy beer would probably say go to Salzburg. Beer drinkers who don’t ride would say go to Munich.

And what if you enjoy both beer and racing?

Help me out, ‘mates!

Hi Brian,
Laura turned me on to your Blog and it sounds like you're having a great time. I loved the picture and entry about Carolyn.
Now, back to your problem. Hellooo? Oktoberfest? The real thing! Beer and food! Craziness, beer and food! German women in bustiers, beer and food! Need I say more?
One more thing, could you mention food a little more in your blog? Thank you.

Brian,

I am enjoying reading about your adventures. Now back to your problem...the bike race of course. You can drink beer anytime anyplace but it is not very often that you have the opportunity to see "The Worlds". Go to the Worlds and on your way back stop by Oktoberfest. The party lasts for a while anyway.

B,

Have you been to a Pro cycling event in Europe where there was not plenty of good beer to be had?

Munich: Just beer. (and, as a minus, drunken Germans ;) )

Salzburg: Beer AND exciting World FREAKIN' Championships!

Choice seems easy to me. Besides, you said that the German beer styles aren't your favorite anyway.

Get some good photos of the race, would ya'?

good points, all of them.

one thing only Oktoberfest has: girls in dirndls drinking litre beers: http://www.toytowngermany.com/forum/index.php?act=module&module=gallery&cmd=si&img=9541

I think maybe Jim has the right idea: why not both? hmm ...

Brian, I vote for Salzburg. One of my friends has visited Salzburg several times as well as many cities in Germany. She has always said that Salzburg is absolutely beautiful. Remember, the hills come alive with the Sound of Music.

Brian,

While Salzburg may not have German women in traditional german clothing serving beer...it will surely draw some great sights. Check out Pez.

All of these sights have shown themselves at various bike races throughout the world. World's will surely draw the best of the best. Having been to Munich (which I loved by the way) it is definitely worth the trip there too even if it is not this weekend. Have fun!!!

OK ... we'll see if I can bring back some photos like that.

I'm bound for Salzburg tomorrow morning. It wasn't looking good. After hours online and making calls, I was told all the hotels were completely booked. Somehow ... I managed to go through a site that found a room. (I called to hotel to verify)

I am going to throw my bike in the car, and see if I can ride on the course tomorrow (if I can get there early enough). If so ... report to follow.

If I were to bet ... my money would be on Bettini.
